American Genealogy
Trace your American Ancestors!
Lately, American Genealogy has become one of the most researched topics in the country – it’s almost as if everybody is wondering where they came from. If you’re curious about North American genealogy, this quick overview will give you an introduction to the process of genealogical research.
North American genealogy is an interesting mix as most of the people living on this continent have relatives who originally immigrated from Europe, Asia, or Africa. Therefore, looking up your roots can result in finding entire families on other continents that you were not previously aware of.
Another reason that many people start to pursue U.S. genealogy is to join a heritage club that they are interested in. If you think that you may have a long-lost relative who is Native American, Italian, or another ethnicity, researching your genealogical roots may shine some light on that history – and you can join the group you’ve been looking at.
Starting out:
If you’re just starting out on your U.S. genealogy research project, you may feel overwhelmed by the number of different sites out there! There are thousands of websites that have genealogical information and hundreds of programs that are designed to help you organize your family tree.
However, you should avoid getting too overwhelmed by all of the options out there. Sometimes, the simple methods are the best. For example, the first thing you should do is interview your other family members – especially your parents and grandparents – to find out what they remember about the family. Some of this might be incorrect, but they will be glad to help you get started. The names you get from these interviews will make your American genealogy research easier.
Other places to research:
Some of the best places to check for relatives are the immigration records at Ellis Island in New York, and old census records. Census records will tell you where your ancestors lived, what they did for a living, and how many people they had in their families.
Broaden your search
While you can find a lot of American genealogy information free online, this is only good for an introduction. You will have to either travel or pay for the privilege of accessing some of the larger databases. However, it will be worth it, as the large databases are more likely to help you find what you need.
American genealogy research can be a rewarding and interesting pasttime – and now you’ve had enough of an introduction to get started!
